Good friends are ususally very hard to come by or keep. Friendships are generally built over time and require patience as well as a lot of input from both parties . Good friends count for more than just a casual relationship; they go beyond the occassional phone call to find out how one is doing, or the weekend lunch treat when one is not busy with other things.

The other day I went out for coffee with a work-mate whom I consider to be a good friend, and before we finished the first cup, two buddies came in and headed straight to our table. My friend quickly introduced them by name and remarked, “We’re just good friends.” I nodded politely but wondered how come I’d never met them before. Surely there should have been time spent together and at least their names mentioned once or twice in conversation.

As an adult I look back on my teen years with amusement. I was not one of those girls who followed boys around all droopy eyed and hopelessly in love. No, I was droopy eyed and in love with my 1957 Pontiac.

My dad was a successful auto mechanic who rebuilt the engine in my Pontiac. Fast cars ! That was my Pontiac. I loved the roar of the motor and the feel of the road beneath my seat. Creatively, I hid grocery items so that my mom would send me to the store. I hauled anyone and anybody just so that I could drive my car. It was so much more than that… It was a connection that I had with my father, washing car parts in the garage, trotting with him through old junk yards looking for treasures. What more could a girl ask for?

I have often heard the phrase “she must have lost her marbles” or her mind, and they are probably right most of the time, but not all the time. It’s easy to lose something today when our lives are so full of activities and stress. So when somebody says I’ lost my marbles I just grin and say “Oh, well, I’ll find them someday” and keep on doing what I’m doing. Sometime our days are harder than others to deal with the stress and constant activities but we just have to remember to not lose too many marbles. We really need all the entire mind we have. Sometimes though our mind does get overworked and needs to take a break from the everyday activities and just to be able to relax and enjoy a sunset at the end of a hard day. When I need a coffee, there is nothing else that will do. I love everything about coffee. I want my caffeine first thing in the morning, but if I do not have it there is always a problem. I do not want to be around people until I have my first cup of coffee and trust me that they do not want to see me either. So there is no doubt that I am addicted to coffee and I also love it like a friend. I love the way coffee smells when it is fresh, but even the aroma of old coffee still in the pot is nice. I love to make a pot of coffee first thing in the morning. I love the taste of that first cup of coffee, but even bad coffee will do. Because I need my coffee, and there is nothing else that will do.
